Start somewhere
Whatever you desire to do, it's important to start somewhere, and the best somewhere is exactly where you are. If you feel overwhelmed by the task, release that feeling and just get started. When you feel outnumbered or overpowered, choose to let go of that feeling and simply get started. If you think you're unworthy or unable, leave that thinking behind and set about to start where you are. Then work to move yourself steadily toward where you intend to go.   Some days you'll make more progress, and some days you'll make less that you’d like. Let the victories and the disappointments all serve to push you continually forward.   Circumstances will never be perfect -- just get started anyway. Things will never work out exactly as you anticipated -- just keep going anyway. What matters is that you start, and then that you persist. The twists and turns and bumps along the way can all end up working in your favor. Start
somewhere, right where you are, and work your way toward whatever you can dare to dream.
-- Ralph Marston

FORMER DISTRICT CHAIRMAN AWARDED THE M.L. LAMAR AWARD

Recently you may have thumbed through the Marietta Daily Journal to see Donald Newsom received the 2002 M.L. Lamar Lifetime Achievement Award because of his commitment to community service.  The Austell Business Association gives the Community Service Award.  He is one of only 3 recipients of the lifetime achievement award.  Mr. Newsom was formerly the District Chairman for Covered Bridge District.  The District Staff would like to echo the Austell Business Association’s thoughts, Congratulations Donnie!

Mr. Newsom stated in the article that he would like to resume working with the Covered Bridge District and we welcome his dedication and efforts.

A SHORT HISTORY LESSON ON ORDER OF THE ARROW

Order of the Arrow dates back to Dr. E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson in 1915.  It was adopted as an official program in 1922 and associated with Boy Scouts in 1943. By 1948, OA had become the national brotherhood of honor campers. 1998 saw OA become the national honor society for the BSA.

The purposes of the Order of the Arrow are as follows:

"1. to recognize those campers--Scouts and Scouters--who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and by such recognition cause other campers to conduct themselves in such a manner as to warrant recognition;

2. to develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit;

3. to promote Scout camping, which reaches its greatest effectiveness as a part of the unit's camping program, both year-round and in the summer camp, as directed by the camping committee of the council; and,

4. to crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others."

Hence, the organization is based on the concepts of brotherhood of cheerful service. It is intended to appeal to older Scouts (14-21) with activities more under youth control and with adult supervision.                   Paul Gritz

Text Box: A note of thanks…

All those who worked Saturday, race day, deserve our appreciation. To name a few of them… Rick Yates, Scott Cupp, Rex Alred and all of the others who pitched in that day. Thank you for another great day at the races!

Covered Bridge District

Annual Banquet – 2002

Make your plans NOW to attend the annual Volunteer Recognition Banquet for the Covered Bridge District.  In keeping with our theme for the banquet, we will celebrate the “Home Town Heroes” of our district.

Ceremonies include recognition of the young men who earned Eagle this past year, the adult volunteers who made things happen, and a special ceremony honoring the volunteers in our district who embody the “Home Town Hero” ideal – the role models for the youth of our district.  And, of course, a great meal with wonderful friends and fellowship.

The highlight of the program will be the presentation of the District Award of Merit to three outstanding volunteers in our district.

The banquet will be held on May 16th at American Legion Post 294, at the intersection of Florence Road and C.H. James Parkway in Powder Springs.  We’ll gather at 6:00 for fellowship, and then the meal and banquet will begin at 6:30.  The cost for this year’s banquet is $15 per person.  Please use the form below to reserve your spot at the banquet.

Thank you for your support of the Covered Bridge District.  See you at the Banquet!
